Formulating questions

For the most meaningful reading, focus on asking open-ended questions that encourage insight and self-reflection. Keep your questions clear, specific, and to the point.

Insight & Reflection vs. Yes/No Questions

The Tarot is a powerful tool for gaining deeper insight into situations, exploring your emotions, and reflecting on your life’s journey. Focusing on open-ended questions allow the cards to guide you toward understanding the current energies, patterns, and potential outcomes. Rather than focusing on a simple answer, you’ll receive a broader perspective that can help you make informed decisions, gain clarity, and reflect on your path forward. These type of readings provide a more holistic view, offering guidance and wisdom for personal growth.

While the Tarot can certainly be used to answer Yes/No questions, it’s important to remember that this approach may not always capture the complexity of a situation. Yes/No questions can provide quick answers, but they may not reveal underlying causes or deeper insights. For a more fulfilling and transformative reading, it’s often best to frame questions that allow for exploration and understanding. Yes/No questions are useful for direct, straightforward answers, but questions focused on the bigger picture provide richer guidance for your personal journey.

Be Concise & Specific

To get the most out of your tarot reading, it’s helpful to ask questions that are both clear and focused. Questions that are too broad or vague can lead to equally vague answers, while specific questions allow the cards to offer deeper insight into your unique situation.

Start by identifying the area of your life you want guidance on—relationships, career, personal growth, etc.—and then narrow it down. Think about what you truly want to understand or explore. Instead of asking, “What does the future hold?” try something more focused like, “What energy is surrounding my current career path?” or “What can I do to improve communication in my relationship?”

Try framing your question with “what,” “how,” or “why,” which tend to invite more meaningful, insightful guidance. Most importantly, approach your reading with an open heart and clear intention—this sets the tone for a powerful reading.

Examples of Open-Ended Questions

  • What can tarot tell me about [name or describe situation]?

  • If you have a time-sensitive question, bake it into the phrasing of the question: What can I do to get X job in X months? instead of “Will I get the job? When?”

  • What are some potential pitfalls of [name of situation]?

  • Why didn’t I get hired for that job?

  • Why is [name of situation/person] upsetting me? Why are they upsetting me REALLY?

  • Why am I feeling stuck? (Suggested follow up: How do I get unstuck?)

  • I’m looking for a new relationship. How will I know when I find the right person?

  • What does Spirit want me to know right now?

  • What situation needs the most attention right now?

  • Instead of: "Will I get the job?", Try: "What insights can I gain about my career path?" or "How can I best approach this job opportunity?"

  • Instead of: "Will I get married?", Try: "What do I need to understand about my current relationship?" or "How can I attract a partner who is right for me?"
