Prepping for Your Tarot Reading

The tarot is an excellent tool for communicating with our Higher Selves, our souls, and higher consciousness in all forms. But to receive guidance, it’s best to be calm and centered. Below are some helpful tips on clarifying what you want to gain from your reading, as well as what you should or shouldn’t do beforehand.

Tarot cards

It’s important to recognize that your mood and state of mind before and during your reading are just as crucial as the reader’s. If you're feeling overly worried, anxious, or scattered, your mind might try to interpret the information in a way that doesn't fully align with what's being shared. This could lead you to hear what you want to hear instead of the truth!

Explore the tips below to get the most insightful and empowering experience from your reading.

  1. Write down all the possible topics you might like to cover during the reading. Do this when you have a moment of calm. Reflect on current situations, relationships, life path/direction, and any goals you might be interested in achieving.

  2. Narrow the topics down to your top 2, keeping a 3rd as a backup in case there is time. Avoid yes/no questions, as the cards rarely give this type of information directly (although I can use other divination tools for questions like this during your reading). It’s best to simply state the name of those involved or describe the situation you are curious about. For help deciding your reading topics and questions, click here.

  3. On the day of your appointment, avoid recreational drugs and excessive amounts of caffeine. You’ll need to be calm and clear minded for the clearest possible reading. Remember, your energy affects the reading too!

  4. Gently focus on staying centered and calm the day of your appointment. Try not to obsess about the reading topics you’ve chosen. Try taking a walk or just standing out in nature, breathing deeply for a few minutes. This will help center and ground you.

  5. Feel free to record audio or keep written notes during your reading. You may also take pictures of the cards to help remind you of what was discussed. As a wonderful post-reading exercise, I recommend reviewing the recording, notes, or pictures afterwards. Bonus points for taking this opportunity to journal and reflect on the session’s insights.

Phone Readings

All of the above applies here as well. The most important factor in a live phone or video chat reading is that you are in a quiet, comfortable space for the full duration of your reading.

Email Readings

If you opted for an email reading, take time to formulate your questions, and try to be as clear and concise as possible. Don’t mix too many questions into one, as this will confuse the energies and may cause the reading to be less accurate. If you are comfortable, send a picture of yourself, as this allows me to focus on your energy during the reading.

Final Thoughts

When seeking insight and guidance from the tarot, it’s easy to get caught up in letting it guide your life. However, I’d encourage you to remember that you are in control. The tarot isn’t here to dictate your every move—it’s a tool to help you gain clarity and make informed decisions. A reading offers a snapshot of the current energies and shows the most likely outcome, but things are always subject to change. If you don’t like the direction a reading suggests, you have the power to take a different path and shift the outcome entirely!
